How Starlink Satellite Internet Works: A Complete Guide

If you can stream a movie in a beach house at the end of a dirt road in Carova, satellites are doing the work. Here is a plain-English explanation of how Starlink’s satellite internet actually works, and why it performs so well on the Outer Banks, where cable and fiber often stop short.

Low Earth Orbit: The Key Difference

Traditional satellite internet (HughesNet, Viasat) relies on a few large satellites parked about 22,000 miles above the equator. Signals take a quarter of a second just to make the round trip, which is why old satellite internet always felt laggy no matter the advertised speed.

Starlink flies thousands of small satellites in low Earth orbit, roughly 340 miles up — about 65 times closer. That single change drops latency from 600+ milliseconds to the 25–50 ms range, which is why video calls, online gaming, and live TV actually work on it.

The Hardware: Dish, Router, and App

A standard kit has three parts:

  • The dish — a flat phased-array antenna that steers its beam electronically. There are no motors to wear out in our salt air; it aims itself at passing satellites hundreds of times per second.
  • The router — provides your home WiFi. In larger OBX rental homes we usually pair it with a mesh system so the signal reaches every floor of a reverse floor plan house.
  • The app — used for setup, obstruction checks, speed tests, and outage history.

How Your Data Travels

When you load a page, the request goes from your dish up to the nearest satellite, which relays it — sometimes hopping between satellites over laser links — down to a ground station connected to the regular internet backbone. The reply makes the same trip back. The whole round trip typically happens in under a twentieth of a second.

Because satellites are constantly moving, your dish hands off between them every few minutes. The handoffs are seamless; you will not notice them during a Zoom call.

What Speeds to Expect on the Outer Banks

What About Weather?

Light rain and fog have little effect. Heavy downpours can slow speeds temporarily, and the dish melts frost and snow on its own. Wind is the real consideration here — not for the signal, but for the mount. A properly anchored coastal installation shrugs off nor’easters; a loose pole mount does not.

Why It Fits the Outer Banks So Well

Large parts of the OBX — the 4×4 beaches, much of Hatteras Island, soundside pockets in Duck and Southern Shores — have limited or no wired options.
